MARTY ARREDONDO - BEYOND VISIONS -  SEPT. 13TH - OCT 5TH, 2008
The Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation will host Marty Arredondo on September 13, 2008 with a Wine and Cheese Opening from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
For many collectors "in the know," a piece of Marty Arredondo's artwork is a must have.  After the first purchase, his wide range of work will prompt another and another because one piece doesn't truly reflect his output.  For twenty years Mr. Arredondo has been displaying his paintings in galleries in Houston, Galveston and Beaumont.  He's particularly proud of being accepted at the very competitive Houston Lawndale "Big Show" three times, once with a painted car fender.
Professionally he is a custom automotive painter and the career continues into his after-hours art activities.  He says this show will be primarily on canvas, medal, and paper using acrylics and automotive urethanes.  He will show a wide range of work with some small items that are price accessible.
When asked about his art, Marty says, "The subjects in my paintings have been and always will be of cosmic consciousness.  I admire folk, surreal, fantasy, and experimental art.  They drive me to produce extensions of my inner self.  Dreams, religion, and Hispanic culture are prominent themes in my work.  There is no conscience effort to portray these concepts, I simply allow them to arise naturally in my art."
Forty-four year old Arredondo is no "navel staring mystic."   Small in stature, he's also a skater and surfer.  But scratch slightly deeper and you find he's most proud of being a Catholic parent raising a family, pretty normal for an artist.
Despite the demands of working to support his family, Marty still finds time to paint nearly every day.  His goal is "...to produce art that challenges views to experience something truly unique and vibrant."  You are invited to sample his vision.

Come and meet the artist and see art by local artists displayed for purchase.  Proud students of Albert Faggard's Portrait Class will display their portraits.

QUILT SHOW BY BEACH BEES - AUGUST 9 THRU SEPTEMBER 7, 2008

The Beach Bees group was formed in the home of Marion Neff in 2001.  The initial members were Diana Eickhron, Donna Heinrich, Alice Hurlbert, Linda Kelly, Jhovita Thomas, Mickey June Wright and Marion Neff.

Discussion centered around each others past work and goals for quilting in the future.  The group also discussed some of the new techniques and tools on the market and nearby places to purchase fabric and take classes.

Very enthusiastically, the Bees decided to meet the second and fourth Wednesday of each month in the old AARP building.  This building was scheduled for demolition, but the county building on Highway 87 was available.  Soon the meetings were changed to the new Joseph Faggard Community Center where they meet to this day.  The members enjoy exchanging information, helping one another with projects, and dining together.  Several members have moved away, new members have joined and the Beach Bees have taken on a life of its own as groups usually do.

The Beach Bees welcome newcomers.  Just bring a sack lunch and drink, along with ideas of what you would like to work on. At present, members belong to various area quilt guilds and attend classes in Friendswood, Galveston, Beaumont, and surrounding area.  Many members attend the International Quilt Show held in Houston each fall.

The pictured members are standing in front of "THE BEACH QUILT," which will be sold at a Silent Auction with opening bid of $300.00 during the show and the funds used to further the activities of the group.

The Beach Bees from left to right:  Linda Kelly, Solange Loughran, Ann Brown, Marion Neff, Donna Heinrich, Karen Shobert, Dianna Eickhorn.

The Absent Tees:  Sonja Schutt, Brenda McDonald, Jolene Unnerstall, Norma Wogglin, Chris Guidry, Mickey Wright, Brenda Palmer, Bobby Wong.

SYDNEY BROWN - JULY 12TH, 2008 - AUGUST 3RD, 2008 - OCEAN GEMS
The Bolivar Peninsula Cultural Foundation will present the artist, Sidney Brown, at a Wine and Cheese Opening from 1:00 to 4:00 on July 12.  Her show, "Ocean Gems" will be on display during the month of July through August 3.
Ms. Brown is a native Houstonian with life-long ties to the upper Texas coast.  The intrigue and beauty of the Gulf's wildlife has inspired Sidney to create unique expressions through her art.
The artist was educated in fine arts at the University of Texas in Austin during the 1970's.  Following graduation Sidney became a designer in a Houston art studio, although her real passion was to teach young people about the power of art.
In the mid-eighties she began her dream of teaching.  She has taught every grade from elementary to high school and guided her students to achieve numerous art awards on the local, state, and national levels.  Her students have acquired degrees in architecture, art, and design.  Now after twenty years of teaching, Sidney is excited about expressing her personal passion for art.
Sidney came to the Bolivar Peninsula about six years ago when she met her partner whose family had been in the area for generations.  The spark of Bolivar's colorful history and natural resources was ignited.  This show is a celebration of this time and the wonders of the Gulf.

CHARLES M. STAGG   JUNE 14TH, 2008  WINE AND CHEESE RECEPTION 1PM TO 4PM

We are proud to present the artist Charles M. Stagg who has been "doing" art most of his life, with only a slight sojourn into the refinery business.

His Bachelor's degree in painting came from Baylor University in Waco and his Master's degree from The Taylor School of Art in Philadelphia.  That was 38 years ago.  Since then, his list of one-man shows and major group shows are too numerous to mention.

He built his reputation in sculpture using a unique system of threading pine sticks on wire cables up to 35 feet tall.  His property in Vidor, Texas provided an endless supply of pines that he harvested in advance of the pine beetle infestation.

Health problems followed by a devastating studio fire in 2006 vaporized the sculpture inventory.  Only a handful of pieces off-site at a gallery in Beaumont survived and of course, the pieces in the hands of collectors in America and Europe.  But even before the fire, he had shifted back to his painting roots and many of the pieces off-site were paintings.  Still in love with wood, he uses plywood panels with knot holes incorporating them into the design of the painting.  He uses tempera paints and tongue oil to fix the image into the wood, uncommon in the era.

May 10 thru June 8th, 2008     A SLICE OF TIME   by Herman Hugg

Come and meet the artist, Herman Hugg, at a wine and cheese opening on Saturday, May 10th from 1pm to 4pm.  Herman came home from World War II and began his artistic career by sketching the scenes around him.  They were not only inages of the flora and fauna, but of GIs and their grief.  He attended West Texas State College, majoring in literature and art.  His postwar paintings were strikingly surrealistic. He taught for 27 years in Beaumont at South Park High School and now lives on an acre of art in Beaumont.  We are sure you will enjoy the years of artistic endeavors by Herman.

April 12-May 3rd, 2008 Art by Andy, Renee and Trish Couglan

A Wine and Cheese Reception will be held on April 12th from 1pm til 4pm for the Couglan Family.  Born in England and now living in Orange, Texas, Andy Couglan is a painter by necessity, a teacher and journalist by professions, and also dabbles in almost every art form possible.  He is known for his painting and drawings exploring the parameters of the "ideal" female form.  "Andy's Women" dispute the prevailing cultural view and celebrate the female form in all its voluptuous brilliance.  He views the world with a sardonic eye through a humorous prism.

Renee Couglan is an internationally recognized doll artist.  She also works as a floral designer.  Renee says that the real joy is in transforming a doll or flowers into her personal vision.  Renee combines a variety of media to create work for this show.

At just 20, Trish Couglan is already establishing a strong reputation as a photographer.  She has won awards in several shows and recently placed first in the Texas Artists Museum's National Photo Show.  Trish's eye for the details that most people overlook is what separates her from the crowd.
